Objet Organizes a Dental System
3D printer manufacturer Objet has joined dental scanning provider 3Shape to create an integrated workflow solution specifically for dental restorations. The solution links 3D models produced by 3Shape's dentist-focused scanning equipment and software directly into Objet's Eden 3D printers. According to Avi Cohen, Head of Medical Solutions at Objet Geometries, the solution:
includes special optimizations to insure that components designed in 3Shapes’s CAD software will always print reliably and accurately using Objet’s additive manufacturing methods and techniques.

Affordable 3-D Arrives
Jeff David used to create his sports helmets the traditional way—sketch an idea on paper, hand-mold a clay model, and ship it to factories in Asia for it to become a plastic prototype. After two years and countless revisions, one might become suitable for mass production.
But often the helmet's distinctive details "would get watered down or lost," says Mr. David, product manager of Troy Lee Designs in Corona, Calif. "And by the time we got to market, some of the design aspects were old news."

Of its role in Avatar, Objet Geometries shares: “For Avatar, James Cameron relied on Objet-created models to plan how his characters fit in Pandora’s lush environment. With 3D printing, the production company Legacy Effects made detailed figurines of each blue-skinned humanoid to test lighting for every camera shot in the movie. The company also used the technology to create a Transformer-like, walking battle armor complete with cockpit.”

Avatar Printing Trivia for your Oscar Party
There’s been a lot of talk in the past months about Avatar, the James Cameron CGI blockbuster. Even if you haven’t seen it (which I admit I haven’t), you’d have to be living under a rock to not have heard about the film and its digitally-generated, blue-skinned stars, the Na’vi. The recent announcement of nine Academy Awards nominations including art direction and visual effects (not to mention best picture) has put the film back in the spotlight.

Building the Future
A visit to Industrial Plastic Fabrications (IPF) is, quite
literally, an experience in all that is bright and modern in the
world of rapid prototyping. It’s with a defeated smile that head of prototyping, Gary Miller, explains (for possibly the thousandth time) why he is dressed in a polo-shirt ‘hot pink’ in colour.

Fender Cuts Rapid Prototyping Costs in Half
with Objet 3D Printer
With its Eden350V, says Greene, the Fender design team can prototype a part within hours versus weeks so they are doing a lot more of it. “We print anything from small guitar parts and amp knobs up to amp chassis and new guitar body designs,” he explains. "We do a lot of overnight printing we set it before we leave and when we get back in the morning the parts are ready.
